Sustainable and High-Performance Cementitious Composites Reinforced with Advanced Composite Materials: Behavior, Design, and Application
The global construction industry is currently at a critical crossroads, facing the dual challenge of environmental decarbonization and structural aging. While conventional reinforced concrete remains the most widely used building material, its reliance on Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) accounts for approximately 8% of global CO2 emissions, rendering it a primary target for carbon reduction mandates. Simultaneously, the premature deterioration of infrastructure—predominantly caused by steel corrosion in aggressive environments—has led to staggering maintenance costs and safety concerns. This systemic vulnerability highlights a growing gap between traditional construction practices and the modern requirements for resilience. Consequently, there is an urgent demand to transition toward alternative cementitious matrices that can either minimize the carbon footprint through innovative binders or provide exceptional mechanical toughness and durability to extend the service life of structures in extreme conditions.Despite the promising potential of FRP-reinforced green cementitious composites, several critical barriers hinder their widespread engineering application. The primary challenge lies in the lack of a systematic understanding of their performance mechanisms across multiple scales—from constituent materials to structural components. This Research Topic aims to address this gap by soliciting cutting-edge research that elucidates the multi-scale performance mechanisms of these hybrid systems. We seek contributions that investigate fundamental mechanical interactions, long-term durability under aggressive environments, seismic response under cyclic loading, and behavior under extreme events such as fire. By leveraging these advances, this collection endeavors to establish reliable design methodologies that translate scientific understanding into engineering practice. The ultimate goal is to develop comprehensive design guidelines that account for the unique failure modes, serviceability requirements, and sustainability benefits of FRP-reinforced high-performance, low-carbon concrete structures, thereby facilitating their confident adoption in resilient and sustainable infrastructure. The focus will be on novel high-performance or green and low-carbon cementitious materials—such as ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), and engineered cementitious composites (ECC), geopolymer concrete — reinforced with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars or grids. Potential areas of interest include, but are not limited to, static structural performance, durability, seismic behavior, fire resistance, and etc. Topic editors: Chang Su, Shui Liu (刘水), Bai Zhang (张白), Zhiyuan Chen Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/79281/sustainable-and-high-performance-cementitious-composites-reinforced-with-advanced-composite-materials-behavior-design-and-application
