Sustainable Aquaculture Practices for Climate Resilience
Marine communities and ecosystems are experiencing unprecedented climatic and anthropogenic pressures that threatens coastal resilience and increase vulnerability. Meanwhile, the growing demand for sustainable seafood production and food safety is a pressing concern given global population growth projections. Recent scientific developments in restorative aquaculture practices have gained significant interest, as this form of aquatic farming not only contributes to blue food provision but can also deliver ecological benefits to the environment, promote economic growth and enhance aquatic ecosystem services. Restorative aquaculture practices encompass a wide range of species and systems, adopting a variety of approaches that share the common goal of improving ecosystem health and human well-being.This thematic Research Topic aims to showcase innovative designs and approaches that provide further insights into the potential of restorative aquaculture practices. It seeks to highlight recent empirical and theoretical progress that can support the development of a robust framework of measurable standards and best practices. Such knowledge is vital for guiding sustainable implementation, informing management decisions and conducting comprehensive assessment of positive social, economic, and environmental outcomes of restorative aquaculture. We welcome contributions that explore and address advances in restorative aquaculture practices in the broadest sense. Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following themes:• Aquaculture approaches to rescue endangered species and prevent biodiversity loss. • Case studies that use climate resilient genetic strategies, including genetic rescue and assisted gene flow management through hatchery releases, to recover depleted local populations of native species. • Low trophic aquaculture practices as an emergent opportunity for carbon sequestration, ocean acidification reduction and climate change mitigation• Regional aquaculture initiatives for coastal resilience, habitat protection, restoration and rehabilitation.• Sustainable aquaculture practices to alleviate environmental pollution.• Citizen Science initiatives/Community-based aquaculture for sustainable aquatic biological resource use and management in the light of climate change.• Multidimensional benefits of Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) systems.• Educational and communication strategies or programs to raise public awareness of the potential benefits of restorative aquaculture.• Models and frameworks that assess and/or quantify the social, economic and ecological outcomes and trade-offs of restorative aquaculture practices.• Exploring synergies between restorative aquaculture and other natural-based solutions for coastal management.• Approaches exploring environmentally harmonious aquaculture perspectives and technologies to minimise environmental disturbance. • The use of innovative approaches such as remote sensing and AI in monitoring the ecological (and economics) impacts of restorative aquaculture Topic editors: Enrique Blanco Gonzalez, YAJIE LIU, Minoru Ikeda, Maria Rowena R.
