Sustainable Chemistry Strategies for Health-Relevant Molecules and Bioactives
Sustainability is increasingly shaping how chemists design, synthesize, analyze, and manufacture molecules and complex mixtures that underpin health-relevant applications. At the same time, modern chemical research is being transformed by enabling technologies and data-driven methods that accelerate discovery while reducing waste, energy use, and hazardous inputs. This Research Topic focuses on chemistry-led, sustainability-oriented strategies across the lifecycle of health-relevant compounds and bioactive systems, from molecular design and synthesis to characterization, process development, and scale-up. We welcome contributions that advance green and sustainable chemistry principles—including safer reagents and solvents, resource-efficient transformations, catalysis, intensified processes, and robust analytical methodologies—together with computational and data-enabled chemistry (e.g., AI/ML, in silico modeling, chemometrics, and automated experimentation) to support decision-making and optimization. The scope includes chemical innovation relevant to bioactive compounds, functional ingredients, and complex chemical matrices, provided the central contribution is chemical (methods, mechanisms, metrics, process chemistry, or analytical chemistry). Submissions should ideally include sustainability rationale and, where appropriate, quantitative assessment (e.g., green metrics, lifecycle-oriented indicators, solvent selection guides, energy and mass efficiency). We welcome Original Research, Review, Mini Review and Perspective articles on themes including, but not limited to:• Green synthetic methodologies for health-relevant small molecules and bioactive compounds.• Catalysis enabling lower-energy, higher-selectivity, and safer chemical transformations.• Sustainable solvent systems, solvent selection, and solvent minimization strategies.• Flow chemistry, mechanochemistry, and process intensification for greener manufacturing.• Greener extraction, purification, and separation methods for complex chemical matrices.• Analytical chemistry enabling sustainability: miniaturization, solvent reduction, and high-throughput methods.• Structure–property relationships guiding performance, stability, and sustainability trade-offs.• Computational chemistry, chemometrics, and AI/ML for reaction and process optimization.• Data-driven design of experiments and automated workflows for sustainable chemistry development.• Green metrics, benchmarking, and reproducible reporting for sustainable chemistry studies.
