Sustainable Corrosion Prevention and Control
Corrosion remains a critical threat to the safety, reliability, and service life of metallic materials and infrastructure in transportation, energy, electronics, marine, and civil engineering. Conventional monitoring methods may provide limited information about the initiation, localization, and progression of degradation, while established protection strategies, including chromate-based coatings and hazardous chemical inhibitors, raise increasing concerns regarding toxicity and environmental persistence. Advanced electrochemical techniques—including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, electrochemical noise, linear polarization resistance, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical frequency modulation, scanning Kelvin probe methods, localized electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and scanning electrochemical microscopy—enable in-situ, non-destructive, and increasingly real-time assessment of corrosion mechanisms and protective-system performance. Their integration with sensors, data analytics, machine learning, and digital monitoring platforms is creating new opportunities for predictive maintenance. At the same time, bio-based inhibitors, chromium-free conversion coatings, self-healing materials, biomimetic surfaces, and other environmentally responsible technologies are being developed to reduce environmental impact. Further investigation is needed to connect advanced monitoring data with the design, validation, durability assessment, and life-cycle performance of sustainable corrosion protection systems across diverse operating conditions. This Research Topic aims to advance the understanding, monitoring, prediction, and sustainable control of corrosion processes by bringing together innovative electrochemical methodologies and environmentally responsible protection technologies. It will address how advanced measurements can elucidate corrosion mechanisms, degradation kinetics, and failure risks, while supporting the development and optimization of green inhibitors, coatings, surface treatments, and smart protection systems. Contributions may also examine how monitoring data, artificial intelligence, and digital tools can improve the selection, performance evaluation, service-life prediction, and maintenance of sustainable corrosion protection solutions. The Research Topic seeks to promote collaboration among researchers, engineers, and industry professionals in materials science, electrochemistry, surface engineering, environmental engineering, biotechnology, and infrastructure management. To gather further insights into advanced corrosion monitoring and sustainable corrosion protection across laboratory, field, and industrial environments, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:· Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, localized electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, electrochemical noise, linear polarization resistance, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical frequency modulation· Scanning Kelvin probe, scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy, scanning electrochemical microscopy, and other localized electrochemical techniques· Real-time, in-situ, non-destructive, and distributed corrosion monitoring· Corrosion mechanisms, including atmospheric, marine, microbiologically influenced, pitting, crevice, galvanic, and stress corrosion cracking· Sensor development, corrosion mapping, wireless monitoring, and digital platforms· Data analytics, machine learning, digital twins, predictive maintenance, and corrosion-risk forecasting· Green and bio-based corrosion inhibitors· Environmentally friendly conversion coatings and chromium-free surface treatments· Self-healing, smart, nanostructured, biomimetic, and multifunctional protective coatings· Sustainable coating formulations and surface modification technologies· Corrosion protection for metallic materials, electronic assemblies, marine structures, transportation systems, energy infrastructure, and emerging materials· Durability, degradation, failure analysis, and long-term performance assessment· Life-cycle analysis, environmental impact evaluation, circular economy approaches, and sustainable manufacturing· Correlation of monitoring responses with protection efficiency, service life, and maintenance strategies Topic editors: Jesus Manuel Jaquez-Muñoz, JESUS PORCAYO-CALDERON, Anabel De La Cruz Delgado Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/84671/sustainable-corrosion-prevention-and-control
