Sustainable Electrification and Energy Efficiency in Transport Systems: Integration and Policy Pathways

The rapid electrification of transport systems is a key component of global efforts to achieve low-carbon energy transitions, improve air quality, and enhance energy security. However, realizing meaningful sustainability benefits requires more than the substitution of internal combustion engines with electric alternatives; it demands a system-level transformation of transport-energy systems, integrating renewable energy, intelligent infrastructure, and energy-efficient operation strategies across both private mobility and public transport systems. This Research Topic focuses on sustainable pathways for electrified transport systems, with emphasis on their role in supporting energy transition, decarbonization, and system-wide energy efficiency improvements. Key areas include electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, smart charging strategies, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies, and electrified mass transit systems such as electric buses, rail-based transport, and shared mobility fleets, all of which enable improved utilization of renewable energy and enhanced system flexibility. From a broader sustainability perspective, electrified transport systems are increasingly interconnected with power systems and urban energy infrastructures. This coupling enables new opportunities for reducing emissions, optimizing energy use, and improving system efficiency at scale. Digital technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things further support this transition by enabling data-driven energy management and optimized operation of transport-energy systems. This Research Topic aims to advance understanding of the technological, systemic, and policy dimensions of transport electrification in the context of sustainable energy transitions. Particular emphasis is placed on solutions that contribute to SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (Climate Action) through improved energy efficiency, system integration, and emissions reduction.
