Sustainable Plant Production in Greenhouse Horticulture and Protected Cultivation
Research on integrated sustainable solutions refers to different levels of protected crop cultivation systems from net houses and high tunnels to fully controlled environments. The thematic areas will cover new sustainable technologies and management for greenhouses, such as: greenhouse crop production of vegetables, flowers, fruits, ornamentals and herbs; organic greenhouse horticulture; greenhouse crop health and resilient crops; greenhouse crop fertigation, sustainable nutrient management; soilless cultivation, sustainable water management; sustainable new growing media; Integral greenhouse systems and design; covering materials; light use strategies; energy saving production techniques; sustainable CO2 management; greenhouse climate and energy modelling; crop modelling; environmental impacts of controlled environment horticulture; circular bioeconomy in controlled environments; life cycle assessment (LCA) in protected cultivation systems; and resilience of protected horticulture against Climate Change. The goal of the Research Topic is to collect research papers addressing sustainable production of different types of horticultural crops cultivated in diverse protected cultivation systems, under varying climatic and socio-economic conditions. Contributions should inform readers about the latest developments in the topics addressed, present innovations, and identify future perspectives based on the current state of the art. The overall aim is to gather ideas and perspectives that can support the future development of a sustainable greenhouse horticultural sector. In this Research Topic, we welcome studies on the following subtopics, but not limited to:• Sustainable greenhouse crop production of vegetables, flowers, fruits, ornamentals and herbs• Organic greenhouse horticulture• Sustainable CO2 management, energy saving production techniques• Sustainable fertigation, nutrients and water management, new growing media• Resilience of protected horticulture against climate change• Life cycle assessment (LCA) in protected cultivation systems• Covering materials and light use strategies• Environmental impacts of controlled environment horticulture• Greenhouse climate and energy modelling, crop modelling.
