Sustainable Solutions for Soil Contamination and Sludge Management: Advances in Geoenvironmental Engineering

Soil contamination and sludge management are pivotal concerns in the field of geoenvironmental engineering. The rapid pace of urbanization, elevated industrial activities, and the intricate impacts of climate change have led to the spread of pollutants, including toxic elements like arsenic, heavy metals, and other emerging contaminants. This growing contamination represents a substantial threat to ecosystems, water quality, and public health. Furthermore, the heightened production of sludge from municipal, industrial, and agricultural sources necessitates the development of innovative disposal and reuse strategies. Recent studies have showcased promising approaches in both soil remediation and sludge treatment, yet challenges remain in understanding the comprehensive effects of these contaminants and optimizing treatment methods to achieve sustainability. This Research Topic aims to explore state-of-the-art solutions in geoenvironmental engineering that address critical issues in soil and sludge management. The key goals include advancing our understanding of arsenic contamination, identifying effective remediation techniques, and establishing sustainable practices for sludge treatment. This includes answering pressing questions on contaminant mobility, bioavailability, and transport modeling, as well as investigating novel technologies like bioremediation and nanomaterial applications. Furthermore, this topic seeks to explore the intersection of soil and sludge solutions, such as using treated sludge to restore contaminated lands, while incorporating modern decision-making tools like AI and IoT.To gather further insights within the domain of soil contamination and sludge management, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Mobility, bioavailability, and innovative remediation strategies for arsenic contamination• Emerging contaminants in geotechnical environments and their challenges• Cutting-edge remediation techniques, including bioremediation and nanomaterial approaches• Advanced sludge treatment technologies and circular economy applications• Synergistic solutions for soil remediation and sludge valorization• Policy frameworks and case studies on sustainable management approachesWe encourage submission of a variety of article types, including original research, review articles, perspectives, and case studies, to enrich this Research Topic.
