Sustainable Water Resource Management and Climate Resilience in Developing Regions
Developing regions face complex water-related challenges, including declining water availability, water quality deterioration, extreme hydrological events, and ecosystem degradation. Recent advances in remote sensing, GIS, hydrological modelling, ecological assessment, and environmental monitoring provide new opportunities to understand and manage water systems more effectively. At the same time, international frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emphasize integrated water resources management as a key pathway toward sustainable development. Interdisciplinary research is therefore needed to bridge scientific knowledge and practical implementation across diverse environmental and socio-economic settings.Water resources in developing regions are increasingly threatened by climate change, land-use transformation, groundwater depletion, biodiversity loss, and growing anthropogenic pressures. Achieving sustainable water security requires integrated approaches that combine hydrological science, geospatial technologies, ecosystem conservation, and community-based management. This Research Topic aims to advance scientific understanding and practical solutions for sustainable water resource management in developing countries. It seeks contributions that address emerging challenges and innovative strategies for enhancing climate resilience, improving watershed health, protecting biodiversity, and supporting sustainable environmental planning. This Research Topic welcomes original research articles, reviews, methods papers, policy perspectives, and case studies related to sustainable water resource management and climate resilience. Topics include, but are not limited to:• Watershed and river basin management• Geospatial technologies for water resource assessment• Hydrological modelling and water balance studies• Groundwater assessment and management• Climate change impacts on water resources• Nature-based solutions and ecosystem restoration• Biodiversity conservation in freshwater ecosystems• Water quality monitoring and pollution assessment• Community-based and participatory water governance• Sustainable environmental planning and policy• Remote sensing applications in hydrology and ecology• SDG-linked water sustainability assessmentsThe collection aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue among hydrologists, geographers, environmental scientists, ecologists, planners, policymakers, and practitioners working toward sustainable water futures in developing regions.
