Synaptic Integration Rules, Network Dynamics and Adaptive Neural Computation
Neural circuits do not apply fixed rules to incoming signals. Synaptic inputs are filtered and combined in dendrites, axons, and local circuits. Their effect depends on timing, location, cellular properties, and the state of the surrounding network. These mechanisms determine which signals are amplified, suppressed, or passed onward. Here, adaptive neural computation refers to changes in a circuit’s input–output function as sensory, behavioural, or internal conditions change. Neuromodulation, learning, movement, attention, sleep, and stress can each alter synaptic integration. Understanding these state-dependent changes is essential for explaining how neural circuits remain flexible while preserving reliable function. The field now has complementary tools for this problem. Synaptic physiology reveals local mechanisms. Connectomics defines circuit architecture. Computational models can test how cellular mechanisms affect circuit dynamics and behaviour. However, these approaches are still too often pursued separately. This limits our ability to predict how synaptic integration rules operate across neural states and across levels of biological organisation. This Research Topic will bring together experimental and theoretical studies that connect synaptic mechanisms with circuit computation. It welcomes work that uses physiology, anatomy, and modelling to explain how neuronal integration supports adaptive function. Studies may use invertebrate or vertebrate systems. To gather further insights into synaptic integration rules and adaptive neural computation, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Synaptic mechanisms that shape neuronal input–output transformations, including excitation–inhibition balance, synaptic timing, gain control, and short-term plasticity• Dendritic computation, compartment-specific processing, and nonlinear integration• Axonal and non-canonical synaptic mechanisms, including axo-axonic and dendro-dendritic interactions• State-dependent changes in neural integration during sensory processing, movement, learning, attention, sleep, stress, or neuromodulation• Connectomic principles of synaptic targeting, circuit motifs, and network organisation• Biophysical, reduced, and network models that link cellular mechanisms to circuit dynamics or behaviour• Experimental validation of model- or connectome-derived predictions through electrophysiology, imaging, optogenetics, chemogenetics, or targeted perturbationWe welcome Original Research, Methods, Reviews, Mini Reviews, Perspectives, Hypothesis and Theory, and Technology and Code articles.
