Synthetic Biology in Space Exploration: Designing Life for Astrobiological Missions

Synthetic biology represents a rapidly evolving frontier in both biological engineering and space science, offering transformative possibilities for astrobiology and the future of space exploration. As humanity prepares for extended missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond, a major challenge lies in sustaining human life, mitigating resource scarcity, and ensuring planetary protection. Recent advances in synthetic biology have enabled the engineering of organisms with novel traits, tailored for survival and productivity in extreme environments found beyond Earth. These breakthroughs have sparked new discussions on their feasibility, safety, and broader applications in the context of astrobiological missions. The primary aim of this Research Topic is to explore and critically assess the latest developments in synthetic biology as they pertain to the design of living organisms for use in space. We seek to address pressing questions about the robustness, adaptability, and efficiency of engineered biological systems in extraterrestrial habitats, as well as the ethical, technical, and regulatory challenges associated with deploying synthetic life outside Earth. This Research Topic encourages the submission of studies and perspectives that evaluate current biotechnological solutions for life support and resource generation, assess potential planetary protection protocols, and provoke thoughtful debate around the implications of synthetic biology in space. The scope of this Research Topic encompasses innovative research that advances our understanding of using synthetic biology for astrobiological applications, without limitation to specific mission types or celestial bodies. Both theoretical and empirical works are welcome, as are interdisciplinary perspectives bridging biology, technology, policy, and ethics. To gather further insights into the field, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Engineering microorganisms and plants for survival in extraterrestrial environments- Synthetic biology-based systems for in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) and life support- Strategies for planetary protection and containment of engineered life- Biosecurity, ethical, and societal considerations in space synthetic biology- Integration of synthetic biology with astrobiology mission design and hardware- Regulatory, technical, and practical challenges of deploying engineered organisms in space- Case studies from current or planned astrobiological missions employing synthetic biology Topic editors: Joshua Elmore, Devin Coleman-Derr Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/72749/synthetic-biology-in-space-exploration-designing-life-for-astrobiological-missions
