System-Level Energy Balance: Metabolic Adaptation to Exercise, Fasting, and Nutrient Timing
Whole-body responses to exercise, fasting, and nutrient timing play a central role in the regulation of energy balance and metabolic function. These interventions influence glucose homeostasis, metabolic flexibility, substrate use, body composition, and obesity-related metabolic dysfunction, while also shaping broader metabolic phenotypes across physiological contexts. As interest grows in how lifestyle-related factors affect metabolism, there is a clear need to better understand the mechanisms, variability, and overall impact of these adaptive responses. This Research Topic aims to bring together current research on system-level metabolic adaptation to exercise, fasting, and nutrient timing, with an emphasis on integrative physiology and whole-body metabolic regulation. We welcome submissions of Original Research, Systematic Reviews, and Reviews that examine how these interventions, alone or in combination, affect whole-body energy balance, glucose regulation, adiposity, lean mass, metabolic flexibility, and body composition as a metabolic phenotype. Studies that clarify physiological mechanisms, compare intervention strategies, or identify factors that shape variability in metabolic responses are particularly encouraged.Key topics of interest include, but are not limited to:1. Whole-body energy balance and metabolic adaptation2. Glucose homeostasis, insulin sensitivity, and metabolic flexibility3. Time-restricted eating, intermittent fasting, and nutrient timing4. Exercise training, physical activity, and substrate utilization5. Body composition and body composition phenotypes in metabolic physiology6.
