Targeted Drug Delivery for Cardiovascular Disease
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, posing a major challenge to health systems. There are a variety of risk factors and conditions contributing to the development and progression of CVDs, including hypercholesterolemia, atherosclerosis, hypertension, diabetes, and unhealthy lifestyles. Despite significant advances in pharmacotherapy, the effective delivery of cardiovascular therapies remains a major challenge. Many therapeutic agents exhibit poor bioavailability, rapid systemic clearance, and instability in biological environments. Additionally, some demonstrate limited tissue penetration and, non-specific distribution resulting in off-target effects and systemic toxicity. These limitations highlight the need for innovative technologies and novel materials capable of targeted, safe, and efficient delivery of cardiovascular therapies. Advancements in cardiovascular drug delivery systems can open new avenues for improving therapeutic efficacy and patient outcomes. This Research Topic aims to attract contributions focusing on innovative and advanced delivery systems technologies for the management of cardiovascular diseases and their associated conditions. The goal is to gather cutting-edge studies and reviews addressing cardiovascular therapies delivery platforms bridging the gap between research and clinical applications. Submissions highlighting innovative concepts, experimental findings, or translational approaches that advance cardiovascular therapeutics through innovative delivery systems are highly encouraged. To advance understanding and innovation in cardiovascular drug delivery, this Research Topic welcomes original research articles, reviews, and perspectives focusing on innovative and advanced delivery technologies for prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease and associated conditions. Submissions may include, but are not limited to, the following themes:• Nanotechnology-based delivery systems. • Polymeric and lipid-based carriers. • Regenerative and tissue-targeted delivery strategies. • Translational and preclinical studies.• Gene and RNA-based therapeutics, including siRNA, mRNA, and CRISPR-based approaches.• Interdisciplinary approaches integrating materials science, nanomedicine, pharmacology, and biomedical engineering. Our goal is to promote a better understanding of the subject and present innovative solutions that could help mitigate cardiovascular disease, while leading to improved outcomes and better health in ageing and modern societies.
