Targeting Neurodegeneration: Emerging Biomarkers, Therapeutics, and Translational Strategies with Small Molecules, Natural Compounds, and Nanotechnology

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's pose major challenges due to their progressive, irreversible nature and the limited availability of effective treatments. However, recent breakthroughs in biomarker research and therapeutic innovation offer new hope. Advances in molecular and imaging biomarkers are enabling earlier diagnosis and more precise monitoring of disease progression. At the same time, the development of small molecules targeting pathogenic proteins and the exploration of bioactive natural compounds have sparked growing interest. Moreover, nanotechnology is transforming drug delivery, offering novel strategies to cross the blood-brain barrier and enhance therapeutic efficacy. The primary aim of this Research Topic is to explore and expand upon these emerging methods to enhance the understanding and treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. Key objectives include the identification and validation of reliable biomarkers, the design of potent small molecules and innovative drug delivery systems, and the assessment of natural compounds for their neuroprotective effects. This research direction also emphasizes the formation of collaborative networks aimed at enriching data sharing and accelerating translational research from preclinical to clinical stages. By focusing on implementation science, we aim to translate these findings into effective and personalized patient care strategies. We particularly encourage submissions that contribute to the establishment of dedicated global databases or networks for neurodegenerative disorders, facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration and integration of findings into clinical practice. Furthermore, insights into patient-specific interventions and applications are highly valued. To gather further insights into neurodegenerative diseases, we invite articles that address, but are not limited to, the following themes:o Innovative biomarkers for early detection and disease progression tracking with a focus on collaborative data-sharing initiativeso Design and impact of small molecules targeting key neurodegenerative mechanismso Investigation of bioactive natural compounds and their neuroprotective potential from diverse originso Advances in nanopolymer-based and other innovative drug delivery technologieso Translational research connecting preclinical discoveries to real-world clinical applicationsWe welcome research articles, reviews, perspectives, and short communications that foster interdisciplinary collaboration and drive advancements in this crucial field.
