Technology-Driven Precision Care in Diabetes, Prediabetes, and Obesity: From Early Detection to Integrated Cardiometabolic Management
The global rise of diabetes is inseparably linked to the parallel epidemics of obesity and the expanding population with prediabetes, collectively shaping a continuum of cardiometabolic risk. Increasingly, diabetes is no longer viewed as an isolated glycemic disorder, but rather as part of a broader, complex, and dynamic metabolic spectrum that begins long before diagnosis and extends across diverse clinical phenotypes—including type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, pancreatogenic (type 3c) diabetes, and other secondary forms. In this context, technological innovation is emerging as a transformative force, enabling a paradigm shift from reactive disease management to early detection, risk stratification, and precision interventions across the entire spectrum of dysglycemia and adiposity. This Research Topic aims to capture the rapidly evolving field of technology-enabled cardiometabolic care, with a particular focus on how digital and biomedical innovations can be leveraged not only to optimize diabetes management, but also to identify, monitor, and intervene in prediabetes and obesity—key drivers of future disease burden.Advances in continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), wearable biosensors, digital phenotyping, and artificial intelligence (AI) are redefining our ability to detect early metabolic dysregulation, characterize glycemic variability, and personalize therapeutic strategies. In individuals with prediabetes, these tools offer unprecedented opportunities for timely intervention and disease interception, while in obesity, digital therapeutics and technology-supported behavioral interventions are reshaping weight management and long-term metabolic outcomes.Furthermore, automated insulin delivery systems, decision-support algorithms, and telemedicine platforms are transforming care delivery across all diabetes types, improving time-in-range, reducing hypoglycemia, and enhancing patient engagement. Importantly, the integration of multimodal data—glucose, weight, physical activity, nutrition, and other physiological parameters—supports a more holistic and patient-centered approach, aligned with the emerging concept of precision cardiometabolic medicine.Despite these advances, significant challenges remain, including disparities in access, data interoperability, regulatory considerations, and the need for robust evidence demonstrating long-term clinical and economic benefits across diverse populations. This Research Topic invites contributions that explore the role of technology across the full spectrum of metabolic disease—from prediabetes and obesity to advanced diabetes and its complications—with an emphasis on translational impact and real-world applicability.Topics of Interest:• Digital detection and monitoring of prediabetes and early dysglycemia• Technology-enabled prevention strategies in high-risk populations• Digital therapeutics and weight management in obesity• Integration of obesity and diabetes technologies in clinical practice• Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) beyond diabetes (e.g., prediabetes, obesity)• Artificial intelligence and predictive analytics for cardiometabolic risk• Automated insulin delivery (AID) systems and advanced diabetes technologies• Telemedicine and hybrid care models for chronic metabolic diseases• Technology in gestational diabetes and maternal–fetal outcomes• Diabetes secondary to pancreatic disease or other conditions (type 3c diabetes)• Real-world data, registries, and digital ecosystems in metabolic care• Behavioral science, adherence, and patient engagement in digital health• Health equity, access, and implementation science in diabetes technology• Regulatory, ethical, and data governance challengesBy integrating perspectives from diabetes, obesity, and prediabetes, this Research Topic seeks to redefine the boundaries of metabolic care—highlighting how technology can enable a shift from glucocentric management to a comprehensive, predictive, and personalized cardiometabolic approach. We particularly encourage interdisciplinary contributions that translate technological innovation into clinically meaningful outcomes and scalable healthcare solutions.
