Technology-Enabled Minimally Invasive Surgery in Genitourinary Oncology: Diagnostic and Intraoperative Innovations
Minimally invasive surgery in genitourinary oncology has undergone significant transformation in recent years due to the integration of advanced technologies. Despite these advancements, challenges remain in ensuring real-time precision, optimizing diagnostic accuracy, and tailoring surgical approaches to rare and less-studied malignancies within the genitourinary tract. Recent research has explored the application of digital solutions, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, alongside robotics and high-definition imaging, to enhance both the preoperative planning and intraoperative management of complex oncologic cases. However, many techniques lack widespread validation, and the impact of these innovations on long-term clinical outcomes, especially in less-represented disease sites, is still being debated.Recent studies have demonstrated the promise of combining enhanced imaging modalities (e.g., intraoperative fluorescence, augmented reality) and biomarker-driven approaches with advanced surgical platforms. These innovations aim to improve tumor localization, margin assessment, and preservation of healthy tissue, thereby reducing perioperative risks and improving patient prognosis. While robotic-assisted surgery has led to greater dexterity and control in confined anatomical spaces, the integration of perioperative digital tools and real-time data analytics remains in its infancy. Ongoing research is beginning to yield evidence on the value of multimodal approaches for refining surgical decision-making and personalizing treatment strategies in genitourinary cancers. This Research Topic aims to synthesize emerging evidence and foster discussion on the role of technology-enabled approaches in minimally invasive and robotic surgery for genitourinary oncology. The principal objectives are to evaluate the clinical utility of advanced imaging, digital integration, and biomarker-guided interventions; to identify current limitations; and to highlight their potential to transform outcomes, specifically for the kidney, upper urinary tract, and rarer genitourinary cancers. By addressing these questions, this Topic seeks to shape future best practices and highlight areas for further research and innovation. To gather further insights into the evolving landscape of technology-enabled surgical innovation and its impact on genitourinary oncology, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Digital and robotic advancements in minimally invasive surgery- Integration of advanced imaging and intraoperative navigation- Biomarker-driven surgical planning and outcome assessment- Clinical outcomes and precision metrics in technology-enabled procedures- Applications in kidney, upper urinary tract, and rare genitourinary cancers- Comparative studies and real-world implementation of new technologies- Challenges and future directions in digital and minimally invasive uro-oncologyWe encourage submissions of original research articles, reviews, case studies, and clinical data reports to ensure a comprehensive exploration of these themes.Dr. Francesco Prata and Prof. Rocco Papalia declare that they provide proctoring for the Hugo™ RAS System (Medtronic) Topic editors: Francesco Prata, Rocco Papalia Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/78083/technology-enabled-minimally-invasive-surgery-in-genitourinary-oncology-diagnostic-and-intraoperative-innovations
