The changing landscape in cardiovascular imaging. From Ultrasound – CT – MRI – PET
Background:Cardiovascular imaging has undergone a transformative evolution over the past decades, reshaping diagnostic and prognostic capabilities across clinical cardiology. Traditional modalities such as ultrasound have provided real-time, non-invasive insights into cardiac structure and function, while advanced technologies like computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET) have expanded the boundaries of precision imaging. Despite these advances, challenges remain in optimizing modality selection, integrating data across systems, and ensuring accessibility and cost-effectiveness. Recent studies have highlighted the growing potential of hybrid imaging, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven reconstruction, and multimodal approaches for improving diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes. However, global implementation remains uneven, and evidence gaps persist in comparative effectiveness and emerging technologies. A comprehensive exploration of these developments is therefore essential to align technological progress with clinical needs.Goal:This Research Topic aims to explore the ongoing transformation of cardiovascular imaging across modalities — from ultrasound to advanced hybrid PET/MRI — and to evaluate their evolving roles in both clinical and research domains. It seeks to gather contributions that address critical questions such as: How can newer imaging tools complement or surpass traditional techniques? What are the best strategies for integrating multimodal data into clinical workflows? How can we balance innovation with accessibility and cost considerations? By uniting engineers, clinicians, physicists, and data scientists, this Topic aims to bridge translational gaps and define future directions in cardiovascular imaging.Scope:This Research Topic covers developments across all major imaging modalities relevant to cardiovascular diagnostics and therapy. It welcomes basic, translational, and clinical research, with an emphasis on comparative, integrative, and technology-driven studies. To gather further insights into the dynamic evolution of cardiovascular imaging, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:-Advances in ultrasound technologies and functional cardiac imaging-Innovations in cardiac CT, including perfusion and plaque characterization-Emerging roles of MRI in myocardial tissue characterization and functional mapping-PET and hybrid imaging for metabolic and molecular assessment-AI, machine learning, and quantitative imaging across modalities-Cost-effectiveness, clinical workflow integration, and global accessibility challenges-Future directions in multimodal fusion and personalized imaging protocols Topic editors: Attila Kardos, Zixiang Ye, Giovanny Sanchez Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/85462/the-changing-landscape-in-cardiovascular-imaging-from-ultrasound---ct---mri---pet
