The Computational Principles of Brain Function: a Neuroinformatics Perspective

Understanding the computational principles that govern brain function is one of neuroscience’s most enduring challenges. How do neural circuits encode information efficiently, sustain stable activity patterns over time, and support learning across multiple timescales? Addressing these questions demands a convergence of theoretical rigor, computational modeling, and large-scale data analysis. Neuroinformatics sits at precisely that intersection. This Research Topic aims to explore the organizing rules of neural computation through the lens of neuroinformatics, emphasizing the integration of computational models, data analysis, and information processing techniques to decode complex neural systems. We welcome contributions that delve into: • Distributed Population Codes: Investigations into how populations of neurons encode information collectively, enabling robust and efficient representations of sensory inputs and motor outputs. • Information-Theoretic Frameworks: Development of models that apply principles from information theory to quantify neural efficiency and the capacity of neural systems to process and transmit information. • Attractor Dynamics: Studies on how neural circuits can settle into stable patterns of activity (attractors) that underlie memory, decision-making, and other cognitive functions. • Multi-Timescale Learning: Exploration of learning mechanisms that operate over multiple timescales, from rapid synaptic changes to slower structural modifications, and how these contribute to adaptive behavior. • Biologically Realistic Network Simulations: Simulations that incorporate detailed biological constraints to model emergent properties of cognition and behavior. By bringing together theoretical, computational, and empirical approaches, this Research Topic seeks to advance our understanding of the fundamental principles that enable the brain’s remarkable computational capabilities, leveraging neuroinformatics tools and methodologies.
