The Decennial Rise of Onconephrology: Defining the New Frontier in Cancer and Kidney Care

Modern onconephrology emerged over a decade ago to bridge the critical clinical gap between nephrology and oncology (Salahudeen and Bonventre, 2013, J Am Soc Nephrol). While the discipline has advanced rapidly through specialized forums and collaborative platforms, the swift expansion of novel oncologic modalities—including targeted small-molecule inhibitors, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), and CAR-T cell therapies—has created complex, treatment-limiting toxicities ranging from acute kidney injury (AKI) to progressive chronic renal disease.Commemorating a decade of formal progress, this Research Topic establishes a strategic roadmap for the future of onconephrology practice, research, and training. By uniting historical reflections, bibliometric trends, mechanistic insights, AI-assisted monitoring, and value-based toxicity stewardship, this collection aims to provide actionable clinical strategies that mitigate renal toxicities while optimizing oncologic outcomes. We invite original research, reviews, mini-reviews, clinical trials, opinion articles, and perspective pieces across the full spectrum of adult and pediatric onconephrology.Submissions are invited across the following core thematic domains:• Origin, Historical Perspective, and Bibliometric Landscape: The decennial evolution, citation networks, global research trends, and foundational literature of onconephrology.• Molecular Mechanisms of Nephrotoxicity: Pathophysiology and toxicity pathways of novel systemic agents, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), targeted therapies, and CAR-T cell therapies.• Biomarkers and Proactive Prophylaxis: Discovery and validation of novel structural and interstitial urinary biomarkers, early diagnostic indicators, and targeted nephroprotection protocols.• Advanced Monitoring and Digital Health: AI-assisted hemodynamic monitoring, predictive risk modeling, machine learning platforms, and real-time/transdermal kinetic GFR dosing.• Clinical Spectrum: Monoclonal gammopathies of renal significance (MGRS), cancer-associated electrolyte and acid-base disorders, and transplant onconephrology.• Pediatric Onconephrology: Unique renal toxicities, long-term survivorship considerations, and management strategies in pediatric oncology.• Health Economics and Stewardship: Value-based preventative strategies, nephrotoxicity stewardship, and cost-effective care.” Topic editors: Abdulla Salahudeen, Ben Sprangers, Abhijat Kitchlu, Ala Abudayyeh Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/82984/the-decennial-rise-of-onconephrology-defining-the-new-frontier-in-cancer-and-kidney-care
