The Future of Brain Imaging: Techniques and Applications
Brain imaging technologies have been instrumental in advancing our understanding of neural structure, function, and connectivity. Established techniques such as MRI, fMRI, PET, and EEG have provided invaluable insights into brain organization and dynamics in both health and disease. However, the field is rapidly evolving with the emergence of innovative imaging modalities and methodological refinements. Next-generation approaches—including ultra-high field imaging, multimodal integration, real-time imaging, functional ultrasound, and AI-enhanced analysis pipelines—promise unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution. These advances are expanding the frontiers of what we can measure and understand about the human brain, while simultaneously presenting new challenges in data interpretation, standardization, and clinical translation. This Research Topic explores the current state and future trajectory of brain imaging science. This Research Topic aims to showcase the cutting-edge developments shaping the future of brain imaging and their transformative potential for neuroscience research and clinical practice. We seek to address critical questions: What emerging imaging techniques are poised to revolutionize brain research? How can multimodal and AI-enhanced approaches improve image quality and interpretation? What are the barriers to clinical translation, and how can they be overcome? What standardization and validation efforts are needed to ensure reliability and reproducibility across platforms? By bringing together leading researchers, clinicians, and technology developers, this collection will highlight innovations, discuss best practices, identify research gaps, and propose pathways to translate advanced imaging technologies into clinical applications that benefit patients with neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. We welcome original research, reviews, perspectives, and technical innovations addressing the evolution and application of brain imaging technologies. Contributions should align with one or more of the following themes:• Emerging Imaging Modalities: Functional ultrasound, diffusion tensor imaging, magnetoencephalography advances, and other novel neuroimaging techniques• Ultra-High Field Imaging: Applications and advantages of 7T, 10.5T, and beyond for improved spatial resolution and novel biomarkers• Multimodal Integration: Combining complementary imaging techniques (e.g., fMRI + EEG, PET + MRI) for enhanced brain characterization• AI and Computational Analysis: Machine learning approaches for image processing, pattern recognition, and automated diagnosis from brain imaging data• Real-Time and Dynamic Imaging: Technologies enabling continuous monitoring and closed-loop applications in research and clinical settings• Standardization and Validation: Protocols, benchmarking frameworks, and quality assurance measures for reliability across sites and platforms• Clinical Translation: From bench to bedside—applications in diagnosis, prognosis, treatment monitoring, and personalized medicine• Methodological Innovation: Novel analytical approaches, image reconstruction techniques, and artifact reduction strategies Topic editors: Daniele Corbo, Francesco Fontanella, Daria E.A.
