The Gut Microbiome's Role in Hormonal Regulation, Aging, and Personalized Therapeutics

Research into the gut microbiome has revealed its pivotal role in shaping endocrine function and influencing the progression of aging. One of the leading areas of investigation centers on the ‘estrobolome’—the aggregate of gut microbiota capable of metabolizing estrogens. Accumulating evidence indicates that disruptions in gut microbial communities, or dysbiosis, are linked to hormonal imbalances and the onset of multiple diseases, like breast cancer, polycystic ovarian syndrome and age associated diseases like cognitive decline, and cardiovascular diseases. While advancements have highlighted the interplay between microbial metabolites and hormone regulation, important questions remain about the mechanisms underlying these interactions and their long-term effects on healthspan.Contemporary studies demonstrate that gut microbes can directly and indirectly impact systemic hormone levels and modulate the efficacy of antiaging interventions. Analysis has shown that the metabolic activities of gut bacteria not only affect estrogen turnover but also interact with dietary, genetic, and lifestyle factors to contribute to individual variability in aging trajectories. Nevertheless, significant gaps persist in identifying actionable biomarkers and precise pathways by which the gut microbiome influences endocrine health and the aging process. There is a pressing need for integrative approaches combining microbiology, endocrinology, and biotechnology to harness these microbial functions for therapeutic benefit. This Research Topic aims to advance understanding of how the gut microbiome governs hormonal regulation and aging, and to catalyze progress toward innovative, personalized interventions. By interrogating the links between gut microbial diversity, hormone metabolism, and age-related disorders, we seek to identify new microbial targets and intervention strategies that can improve hormonal health and prolong healthspan across populations. To gather further insights into the multifactorial relationships between the gut microbiome, hormones, and aging, we welcome original research articles, reviews, mini-reviews and all type of article accepted by the journal addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o The role of the estrobolome in estrogen metabolism and its clinical significanceo Mechanistic studies on gut microbiome–hormone interactions in aging, cancer and cardiovascular diseases.o Microbial biomarkers and diagnostics for age-related endocrine disorderso Impact of diet, antibiotics, genetics, and lifestyle on microbiome-mediated hormonal pathwayso Translational advances in microbiome-based personalized therapeutics for aging, cancer and cardiovascular diseases.o Animal model studies exploring vertebrate-specific microbiome–hormone dynamics Topic editors: Roshan Kumar, Mona Singh, Hui-Xin Liu Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/81059/the-gut-microbiomes-role-in-hormonal-regulation-aging-and-personalized-therapeutics
