The New Challenge for Preserving Air Quality: Characterizing, Mitigating, and Regulating Non-Exhaust Emissions from Next-Generation Vehicles
Deterioration of air quality in urban areas represents a critical public health concern with road transportation being the main cause. Vehicular traffic is an important source of PM pollution that is responsible for premature mortality and morbidity. In the last years, the application of stringent regulations together with improvement of engine control technologies has led to a dramatic decrease in exhaust emissions (EE) from internal combustion engines. This achievement has underscored the significance of previously underappreciated non-exhaust emissions (NEE) generated from the wear of vehicle components such as brake, tire, clutch, from road surface wear, and road dust resuspension. The issue of NEE has being exacerbated by the advent of next-generation vehicles, such as the electric ones, which, despite having zero tailpipe emissions, have increased mass thus leading to higher NEE. In this framework, it can be argued the importance of characterizing, mitigating, and regulating NEE.This Research Topic aims to address a critical and currently under-regulated aspect of sustainable mobility, the Non-Exhaust Emissions (NEEs). It will pave the way for a more complete understanding of all vehicle-related particle emissions thus ensuring that the next-generation vehicles will be effectively zero-impact emissions. To pursue this objective, a concerted effort across three key areas is needed:1. Characterization: Develop standardized real-world measurement methods and advanced models to quantify and chemically characterize NEE from different sources, vehicle types and driving conditions.2. Mitigation: Investigate and propose reduction solutions including innovative materials, advanced capture systems, optimization of traffic management strategies and driver behavior.3. Regulation: Provide robust data required to support the development of effective, harmonized regulatory limits and policies for NEE.This Research Topic will aim to receive original research and innovation on, but not limited to:- Testing and Measurement- Predictive Modelling- Chemical and Toxicological Analysis- XIL (Model/Software/Hardware) in the Loop- Mitigation technologies- Material Innovation- Design Optimization- Environmental impact- Global Regulatory landscape Topic editors: Agnese Magno, Silvana Di Iorio, Danilo Engelmann Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/76765/the-new-challenge-for-preserving-air-quality-characterizing-mitigating-and-regulating-non-exhaust-emissions-from-next-generation-vehicles
