The Potential of Peptides as Novel Therapeutic Agents for Oral Diseases

Peptide science has emerged as a pivotal area in the development of novel therapeutic agents for oral diseases. Oral diseases, such as dental caries, periodontitis, oral mucositis, and oral cancers, represent significant global health burdens that can adversely affect quality of life. Traditional therapeutic approaches have shown varying degrees of success, often burdened by side effects, antibiotic resistance, or limitations in targeted efficacy. Recent research highlights the multifaceted bioactivities of peptides, including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and regenerative properties, which collectively make them attractive candidates for oral disease management. Advances in peptide engineering, drug delivery techniques, and molecular biology have broadened the landscape of potential peptide therapeutics. However, gaps remain regarding the optimization of peptide stability, bioavailability, and targeted delivery in the oral environment. While several preclinical studies and early-phase clinical trials demonstrate promising outcomes, large-scale translational studies and comprehensive mechanistic assessments are still lacking. This Research Topic aims to critically assess and highlight recent advances in the discovery, design, and clinical potential of peptides as therapeutic agents for oral diseases. The primary objective is to bring together research elucidating mechanisms of peptide action, strategies to enhance peptide delivery and stability, and evidence supporting their efficacy in preclinical or clinical contexts. By addressing outstanding questions, such as the long-term safety of peptide therapeutics, their potential to overcome existing drug resistance, and optimal delivery methods, this Topic seeks to provide a comprehensive outlook on the future of peptide-based oral healthcare. This Research Topic covers research dedicated to the investigation of peptide therapeutics within the context of oral diseases, while excluding studies outside the oral cavity or those that do not focus on peptide-based interventions. To gather further insights in this rapidly evolving field, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Mechanistic studies of peptide function against oral pathogens• Engineered and synthetic peptide design for oral healthcare• Delivery systems and formulation strategies for oral peptides• Peptide-based intervention in oral mucosal and bone diseases• Clinical trial outcomes and translational studies of oral peptide therapeutics• Overcoming barriers to peptide stability and bioavailability in the oral cavity Topic editors: Wentao Jiang, Junyuan Luo Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/75419/the-potential-of-peptides-as-novel-therapeutic-agents-for-oral-diseases
