The Role of Educational Apps and Digital Media in Early Childhood Cognitive Development

Educational technologies are increasingly embedded in early childhood learning environments, from preschool through the first years of primary school and across the home–school interface. Interactive apps, adaptive e-texts, multimedia platforms, learning management systems, and tele-assessment/intervention tools offer promising avenues to support foundational cognitive skills. Yet, the evidence base is mixed regarding which features and implementations reliably enhance early cognitive development, including executive functions, problem-solving, attention and working memory, and language acquisition. Key open questions concern design features, instructional integrations, and learner/context moderators (e.g., linguistic background, risk for specific learning disorders, socioeconomic status) that drive meaningful, generalizable gains. This Research Topic aims to rigorously evaluate the effectiveness of educational apps and digital media in promoting cognitive development among young children. We seek to advance a learning-first, mechanism-focused agenda by clarifying for whom, how, and under what conditions digital tools optimize outcomes in early childhood. By synthesizing high-quality evidence across classroom, home–school, and tele-delivery contexts, we aim to identify design principles and implementation strategies that maximize learning, engagement, and equitable access. We welcome submissions centered on early childhood (approximately ages 3–10) that address:o Cognitive outcomes supported by educational technologies, including problem-solving, executive functions, attention and working memory, language acquisition, emergent literacy, early reading and writing, rapid automatized naming, and sourcing/intertextual integration in beginning readers;o Design features and human–computer interaction elements that enhance learning, engagement, usability, accessibility, and transfer in authentic settings (classroom, home–school, 1:1 devices/LMS, tele-assessment/tele-intervention);o Mechanisms and moderators of impact, including engagement, teacher/parent mediation, learner linguistic status, risk for specific learning disorders, socioeconomic status, and other contextual factors;o Implementation quality, fidelity, and scalability, including effectiveness–implementation hybrids, and studies of disparities in access and use across socio-cultural contexts and educational systems;.We encourage diverse methodologies, including randomized and quasi-experimental trials, longitudinal studies, effectiveness–implementation designs, measurement and validation studies, mixed-methods, and meta-analyses.Manuscript types may include Original Research, Systematic Review, Review, Brief Research Report, Methods, Conceptual Analysis, and Perspective. Social-emotional learning and digital well-being are welcome where they intersect with learning processes and engagement.
