The Role of Mental Health Factors in the Prevention and Management of Musculoskeletal Disorders: A Psychiatric Perspective

The intersection of psychiatry and musculoskeletal health has become an increasingly significant field of study, revealing how psychological, biological, and social factors interact to influence physical well-being. Recent research indicates that musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) such as chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and back disorders are not purely biomechanical conditions but are profoundly shaped by mental health factors including stress, anxiety, depression, and coping mechanisms. Studies have shown that these disorders can worsen psychological distress, while psychiatric conditions may contribute to the onset or progression of physical symptoms—creating a bidirectional relationship. Despite increasing recognition of this interplay, the mechanisms underlying these interactions remain insufficiently understood. Current models often treat physical and mental health separately, overlooking the potential benefits of integrated prevention and management strategies that address both dimensions concurrently. This Research Topic aims to deepen understanding of how mental health factors contribute to the prevention, management, and recovery of musculoskeletal disorders from a psychiatric perspective. It seeks to explore the mind–body interactions that underpin these complex relationships and to identify evidence-based strategies that enhance patient resilience, treatment adherence, and long-term outcomes. Key goals include clarifying the pathways through which psychological variables influence musculoskeletal health, developing integrative interventions, and refining clinical practices that align psychiatry with physical medicine. By combining insights from psychiatry, psychology, neuroscience, and rehabilitation science, this initiative aspires to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in both research and clinical applications. To gather further insights into the interconnection of mental health and musculoskeletal disorders, we welcome contributions that investigate the psychological dimensions of prevention, management, and rehabilitation. We encourage both empirical and theoretical submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes: - The impact of musculoskeletal disorders on mental health and quality of life - Mind–body interactions and biopsychosocial mechanisms in musculoskeletal disease processes - Psychiatric and psychological correlates of musculoskeletal disorder risk and progression - Prevention and management strategies integrating mental health and physical rehabilitation - Psychological predictors and moderators of musculoskeletal treatment outcomes - Interventions combining psychotherapy, behavioral activation, or mindfulness with physical therapy - The role of self-awareness, self-management, and self-perception in recovery and prevention This Research Topic welcomes submissions of the following article types: Brief Research Report, Case Report, Clinical Trial, Correction, Editorial, FAIR² Data, General Commentary, Hypothesis and Theory, Methods, Mini Review, Opinion, Original Research, Perspective, Policy and Practice Reviews, Review, Study Protocol, Systematic Review.
