The Role of Microbial Secretomes in Host-Pathogen Interaction and Their Impact on Disease Evolution, Volume II

Building on the momentum of our first volume, this Research Topic continues to explore microbial secretomes as central players in host-pathogen interactions and disease progression. Secreted proteins, whether shed from microbial membranes, released via extracellular vesicles, or exported through active secretion systems, remain a rich source of biological information about how pathogens sense, adapt to, and manipulate their host environment. Volume II builds on the foundational work from our first collection by inviting deeper mechanistic and translational investigations into secretome biology across a wider range of pathogens, host systems, and disease contexts, with particular attention to the adaptive and innate immune responses these secreted factors provoke, evade, or reshape. This second volume aims to expand our understanding of how secreted microbial proteins act at the interface between infection and immunity. We are particularly interested in studies that connect secretome composition to functional outcomes: how specific proteins drive immune evasion, alter antigen presentation, modulate cytokine signaling, or influence the balance between innate sensing and adaptive immune activation. Contributions using advanced proteomic, genomic, and bioinformatic approaches to characterize these proteins are welcome, as are studies that translate secretome findings into practical applications such as vaccine antigen discovery, biomarker development, or novel antimicrobial strategies. By continuing this line of inquiry, Volume II seeks to sharpen the link between basic secretome characterization and its consequences for host immune function. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:Secreted protein-driven modulation of innate immune sensing and signaling pathways.Microbial secretome contributions to adaptive immune evasion and antigen presentation interference.Comparative secretome analysis across pathogen strains, species, or infection stages.Application of proteomic and genomic tools to identify novel virulence-associated secreted proteins.Secretome-informed biomarker discovery for infection diagnosis and disease staging.Secretome-based vaccine antigen and drug target identification.Extracellular vesicle-mediated secretion and its role in host-pathogen crosstalk.
