The Role of Mycotoxins in Neurodegenerative Diseases and Neuropsychiatric Symptoms

Mycotoxins, secondary metabolites produced by molds or fungi, have emerged as significant contaminants in various food products, including cereals, wheat, coffee beans, corn, dried fruits, dried meat products, spices, rice, and crude vegetable oils. Despite the absence of visible mold, these toxins can persist in food, posing a hidden threat to human health.Recent studies have linked mycotoxin exposure to an increased risk of neurotoxicity, neurodegenerative diseases, and a range of neuropsychiatric symptoms such as cognitive impairment, depression, anxiety, short-term memory loss, and color recognition issues. While the detrimental effects of mycotoxins on the central nervous system are becoming more apparent, the precise pathways and mechanisms through which they exert their influence remain inadequately understood. This gap in knowledge underscores the need for comprehensive research to elucidate the role of mycotoxins in physiological and pathophysiological processes within the central nervous system. This research topic aims to deepen our understanding of the type and role of mycotoxins in neurodegenerative diseases and neuropsychiatric symptoms. By exploring the pathways and mechanisms through which mycotoxins induce neurotoxicity, this collection seeks to provide novel insights and perspectives for future research. The research will focus on assessing mycotoxins in in-vitro cell cultures, as well as in animal and human models, to uncover the underlying processes and potential interventions. To gather further insights into the global impact of mycotoxins on neurodegenerative diseases and neuropsychiatric symptoms, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Mechanisms of Mycotoxin-Induced Neurotoxicity- Novel Approaches to Minimizing Mycotoxin Contamination and their role in neurodegenerative disease- Effects of mycotoxins in neuropsychiatric symptoms, including depression, anxiety, and insomnia- Commentaries from regulatory agencies describing the monitoring of mycotoxin levels and their role in neurotoxicity- Discovery of novel targets, current state of the art, and future perspectivesNeuropharmacology welcomes submissions of the following article types: Brief Research Report, Case Report, Clinical Trial, Community Case Study, Correction, Data Report, Editorial, General Commentary, Hypothesis & Theory, Methods, Mini Review, Opinion, Original Research, Perspective, Review, Study Protocol, Systematic Review, Technology and Code.
