The Role of Self-Perception in Mental Health: Current Insights on Self-Esteem and Self-Schemas, vol II

This is the second volume of our Research Topic, you can read our first volume here. Studies show that our self-view and perceptions of others are linked to various psychiatric symptoms and disorders. Low self-esteem is a criterion for depressive disorders, while high self-esteem is often seen in bipolar disorders. Additionally, issues with self-esteem and maladaptive self/other schemas are connected to anxiety, personality, and schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Low self-esteem and self-schema issues may exist prior to the development of full psychiatric symptoms. Conversely, experiencing a psychiatric disorder can further damage self-esteem, aggravating the disorder and inhibiting recovery. Thus, understanding the role of self-esteem and self/other schemas in psychiatric symptoms is crucial. This Research Topic seeks to gather new evidence on the relationship between self-esteem, self/other schemas, and psychiatric symptoms/disorders. It aims to explore this relationship not only in clinical settings but also in nonclinical contexts and early symptom development stages. The focus is to understand how damaged self-esteem and maladaptive self/other schemas influence the onset, progression, and outcome of psychiatric conditions. Furthermore, it explores how symptoms affect self-view and whether this exacerbates or hinders recovery. Limited previous research suggests that maintaining healthy self-esteem and self/other schemas may prevent or reduce symptom severity and be predictive of recovery. Therefore, gathering new data on their protective role against psychiatric disorders is important. This Research Topic invites Original Research and Review papers that provide current insights and evidence on self-esteem, self/other schemas, and psychiatric disorders. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:- The role of self-esteem and self/other schemas as predictors of symptoms and psychopathologies.- Self-esteem and self/other schemas as outcomes in individuals with specific symptoms or disorders.- The function of self-esteem and self/other schemas as mediators/moderators between risk factors and psychiatric disorders.- Predictive value of self-esteem and self/other schemas for psychiatric-like symptoms or maladaptive personality traits in nonclinical samples.- Examination of self-esteem and self/other schemas in early stages of disorders.- Protective factors of optimal self-esteem and self/other schemas.- Predictive power of self-esteem and self/other schemas for functioning and quality of life.- Comparing self-esteem and self/other schemas among clinical, nonclinical, and control groups.- Differences in self-esteem and self/other schemas across various psychiatric disorders.
