The Science of Bee Management: Balancing Ecology, Efficiency, and Sustainable Agriculture

Global food production depends on bee-mediated pollination, yet pollinator populations are declining under pressure from habitat loss, pesticide exposure, disease, climate change, and agricultural intensification. Managed pollination - the deliberate deployment of bee species to support crop production - has grown in importance as a practical response, but critical knowledge gaps remain. How do different bee taxa compare in pollination efficiency across crops and environments? What are the downstream effects of managed bee introductions on native pollinator communities? How can colony health and management practices keep pace with increasing agricultural demand? These questions sit at the intersection of applied entomology, ecology, and food systems science, and they don’t yet have unified answers. This Research Topic brings together original research, reviews, and perspectives that advance our understanding of managed pollination across its biological, agronomic, and ecological dimensions. We particularly welcome contributions that move beyond honeybee-centric approaches and address the growing role of bumblebees, stingless bees, and solitary bees in diversified pollination systems. We invite submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following areas:1. Comparative pollination efficiency across managed and wild bee species, crops, and landscapes2. Colony health, disease management, and resilience under agricultural conditions3. Effects of managed bee introductions on native pollinator communities and biodiversity4. Optimising bee deployment strategies for horticultural and agronomic productivity5. Impact of bee-mediated pollination on crop yield, quality, and nutritional value6. Integrative conservation strategies that support both managed and wild pollinators7. New technologies and approaches in bee management for improved efficiency and sustainabilityWe aim to foster cross-disciplinary dialogue and encourage research that advances both the practical and ecological dimensions of managed pollination, supporting sustainable food systems and the conservation of pollinator biodiversity.
