The Socioeconomic Impact of Climate-Induced Health Risks in Emerging Economies

Climate change is a pressing issue that is reshaping the global landscape, especially affecting health systems and socioeconomic resilience in low- and middle-income countries. The rising frequency and severity of extreme weather events, such as heatwaves, floods, droughts, and wildfires, present significant challenges to public health systems and economic stability. In regions lacking robust infrastructure and financial resources, these climate-induced challenges exacerbate existing health and economic disparities, highlighting the need for targeted actions and in-depth research to bolster resilience and adaptability. This Research Topic aims to explore the socioeconomic dimensions of climate-induced health risks, focusing on emerging economies. The main objectives are to identify and assess the impacts of climate change on household welfare, labor markets, and public health systems, and to evaluate existing health financing and insurance mechanisms under climate stress. By highlighting the intersections of climate vulnerability, health inequities, and economic fragility, the research seeks to inform evidence-based, equitable, and sustainable policy responses. To gather further insights into the intersection of climate change, health, and socioeconomic resilience in emerging economies, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Economic impacts of climate-related health shocks on households and labor markets- Health financing and insurance mechanisms under climate stress- Public policy and fiscal responses to climate-health challenges- Environmental determinants of health in low-resource settings- Innovations in health system resilience and service deliveryWe encourage submissions in the form of Original Research, Reviews, and Case Studies, employing rigorous quantitative or mixed-method approaches, to deepen our understanding of how to best address these interconnected challenges effectively.
