Therapeutic Potential of Phytochemicals: Novel strategies, New Discoveries and Advanced Formulations

Phytochemicals, the diverse bioactive compounds derived from plants, have long been recognized for their pharmacological potential and are increasingly being explored as sources of novel therapeutic agents. They exhibit a wide spectrum of biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, and neuroprotective effects. However, despite their remarkable therapeutic promise, many phytochemicals face challenges such as poor water solubility, instability, rapid metabolism, and limited bioavailability, which hinder their clinical translation. This Research Topic aims to bring together cutting-edge research and comprehensive reviews focused on the therapeutic potential of phytochemicals and the development of advanced delivery systems to overcome these limitations. We welcome contributions exploring the pharmacological mechanisms of phytochemicals, as well as innovations in formulation science and nanotechnology designed to enhance their pharmacokinetic and therapeutic profiles. We encourage submissions that address, but are not limited to, the following themes:• Discovery, isolation, and structural characterization of novel phytochemicals with promising (in vitro) pharmacological profiles• Pharmacological evaluation of phytochemicals in vitro and in vivo• Nanotechnology-based and advanced formulations (e.g., liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles, nanoemulsions, micelles, phytosomes, and solid lipid nanoparticles) for phytochemical delivery• Assessing the safety including interaction risks of bioactive phytochemicals• Pharmacokinetics, improved bioavailability, and targeted delivery strategies of bioactive phytochemicals• Synergistic and antagonistic interactions between phytochemicals and conventional therapeutics• Computational, systems biology, and omics-based approaches to phytochemical research on bioactives• Preclinical and clinical investigations on the efficacy and safety of phytochemicalsThis Topic provides a multidisciplinary platform for researchers across pharmacology, natural product chemistry, nanotechnology, and biotechnology to exchange insights and advance the field of phytochemical-based therapeutics. By emphasizing innovative formulation strategies and translational pharmacology, this Topic seeks to accelerate the journey of phytochemicals from the laboratory bench to clinical application. All submissions must adhere to the best practice guidelines for pharmacological studies on plant extracts and natural products, including the Four Pillars of Best Practice in Ethnopharmacology and the ConPhyMP statement (Front. Pharmacol. 13:953205). Detailed documentation of material origin, extraction, and processing is essential. Manuscripts lacking this information will be desk-rejected. The full guidelines and ConPhyMP self-assessment tool are available here: https://ga-online.org/best-practice/.
