TIVAP and Ultrasound-Guided Interventions in Modern Cancer Therapy: Chemotherapy, Immunotherapy, and Clinical Outcomes
The field of vascular access in oncology care has undergone significant advancements with the introduction of the totally implantable venous access port (TIVAP) and the integration of ultrasound-guided interventions. These technologies have transformed the delivery of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and supportive care, especially for patients requiring long-term venous access. Despite the established benefits—such as lowered infection risks, improved patient quality of life, and reduced maintenance burden—important challenges persist, including complications associated with device implantation and maintenance, and varied outcomes across different patient populations. Recent studies have focused on technological advances, new materials, and procedural innovations, yet there remain critical gaps in standardized care, complication management, and understanding special patient group needs. Ongoing debates concern optimal insertion techniques, management of device-related infections, and personalized procedural pathways, all underscoring the need for continued innovation and research to maximize the therapeutic and life-quality benefits of TIVAP.This Research Topic aims to advance the understanding of TIVAP and ultrasound-guided interventions in modern cancer therapy, fostering the development of best practices for vascular access in oncology. Specifically, the goal is to synthesize current evidence on surgical and procedural innovation, clarify the mechanisms and management of complications, create avenues for the adoption of cutting-edge materials and technology, and establish standard protocols for holistic patient care. Additionally, the topic seeks to address unmet needs in specific patient populations, such as pediatric, geriatric, and critically ill patients, and to elucidate the impact of these interventions on patient-reported outcomes. The scope of this Research Topic encompasses technical, clinical, and patient-centered aspects of TIVAP and ultrasound-guided venous interventions in oncological settings, without extending to transient, non-implantable access devices or unrelated vascular procedures. To gather further insights in this domain, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Surgical techniques and implant strategies for TIVAP placemento Prevention, diagnosis, and management of device-related complicationso Nursing care and holistic management throughout the patient journeyo Applications in special patient groups and diverse clinical scenarioso Emerging technologies and future directions in venous access and interventionPlease note: Manuscripts consisting solely of bioinformatics, computational analysis, or predictions of public databases which are not accompanied by validation (independent clinical or patient cohort, or biological validation in vitro or in vivo, which are not based on public databases) are not suitable for publication in this journal.
