Topological Properties and Applications of Kagome Materials
Kagome materials have emerged as a compelling focus within the broader field of quantum materials, due to their unique lattice geometries and the resultant interplay of topological effects and electronic correlations. Unlike conventional materials, whose properties are largely determined by atomic composition and crystal structure, kagome-based compounds harness geometric frustration and topology to generate unconventional physical phenomena. Notably, these materials have demonstrated significant properties such as flat bands, Dirac fermions, and a pronounced topological Hall effect—features that hold great promise for advancing magnetic, electronic, and quantum device applications. Despite rapid progress, there remain substantial gaps in understanding the fundamental mechanisms governing structure-property relationships in kagome systems, particularly as they pertain to realization of robust room-temperature functionalities. The latest experimental and theoretical studies have broadened the landscape of known kagome compounds, yet controlling and optimizing their topological responses for practical use is still an open challenge warranting systematic investigation. This Research Topic aims to highlight recent progress and develop a comprehensive understanding of the synthesis, modeling, and technological exploitation of topologically active kagome materials. The objective is to consolidate efforts exploring how geometric attributes and electronic behavior in these systems can be tuned and controlled, not just for fundamental discovery, but for the realization of room-temperature devices. Key questions to be addressed include: What are the most effective strategies for doping and manipulation to tailor topological and magnetic properties? How can theory and computation accelerate the discovery of new kagome materials? And which emergent electronic and magnetic phenomena are most promising for device integration? This Research Topic will focus on studies that advance the synthesis, theoretical and computational modeling, and practical exploitation of kagome materials, with an emphasis on their topological attributes and room-temperature potential.
