Towards Personalized Treatment of Cognitive Symptoms in Psychiatric Disorders: Usefulness of Clinical Indicators and Biomarkers
Cognitive symptoms, such as impairments in memory, attention, and executive functioning, are prevalent across a wide range of psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder. These deficits significantly hinder daily functioning and overall quality of life and are often resistant to current standard treatments. Advances in neuroscience and biomedical research have uncovered a diverse array of clinical indicators and biomarkers—ranging from neuroimaging and genetic profiles to cognitive test performance—that may illuminate the underlying biological and clinical heterogeneity contributing to these symptoms. Integrating such insights has the potential to revolutionize how cognitive dysfunction in psychiatric conditions is diagnosed and treated. The goal of this Research Topic is to address the urgent need for more personalized approaches to the treatment of cognitive symptoms within psychiatric disorders. Despite the growing recognition of cognitive impairments as a central concern, treatment remains predominantly generalized and often inadequate. By leveraging clinical indicators and biomarkers, we may be able to predict individual symptom profiles, treatment responses, and long-term outcomes, thus facilitating precision medicine approaches. This Research Topic encourages contributions that bridge the gap between basic research and clinical application—such as identifying new or underutilized biomarkers, validating their predictive ability in real-world clinical settings, and developing innovative, tailored intervention strategies. Ultimately, these efforts aim to improve both clinical decision-making and patient outcomes by fostering individualized treatment plans for cognitive dysfunction. We welcome submissions that focus on the identification, validation, and clinical utility of biomarkers and clinical indicators for the personalized treatment of cognitive symptoms in psychiatric disorders. Contributions may include original research, reviews, among other article types. We particularly encourage interdisciplinary research and studies that span from bench to bedside and back.Specific themes of interest include:- Predictive biomarkers for cognitive dysfunction and treatment outcome- Functional and structural brain imaging studies- Multimodal profiling for patient stratification,- Biomarker-guided therapeutic interventions (pharmacological or cognitive remediation)- Ethical and practical challenges in clinical implementation.
