Towards Precision Medicine in Sepsis: From Diagnosis to Targeted Therapies
Sepsis, a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection, remains a major global health challenge with high morbidity and mortality rates. Despite advances in supportive care and antibiotic therapy, significant improvements in patient outcomes have been limited. This is largely due to the profound heterogeneity of the patient population, with wide variations in clinical presentation and underlying immune responses. This heterogeneity has been a major factor in the failure of numerous clinical trials investigating immunomodulatory therapies. The principles of precision medicine, which advocate for tailoring medical interventions to the unique characteristics of individual patients, present a promising new paradigm for the management of sepsis. This Research Topic will explore the latest advancements in precision medicine for the diagnosis and treatment of sepsis. We aim to convene leading experts to discuss the current state of the field, identify key challenges, and outline future research directions. The primary goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of how precision medicine can be practically applied to improve outcomes for patients with sepsis. This includes a focus on the use of biomarkers for early diagnosis and risk stratification, the development of targeted immunotherapies, and the application of multi-omics technologies and machine learning algorithms to identify novel therapeutic targets and distinct patient subgroups. Ultimately, we hope to stimulate collaboration and drive innovation in this rapidly advancing area of critical care medicine. We invite the submission of original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and forward-looking perspectives on all facets of precision medicine in sepsis. Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to:• Novel biomarkers for sepsis diagnosis, prognosis, and prediction of treatment response• Multi-omics approaches (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics) in sepsis research• Identification and validation of distinct sepsis endotypes and clinical phenotypes• Preclinical and clinical development of targeted immunotherapies• Application of machine learning and artificial intelligence for sepsis prediction and management• Challenges and opportunities in the clinical implementation of precision medicine for sepsis• The role of the microbiome in the pathophysiology of sepsis and its therapeutic potential Topic editors: Amr A Arafat, Monirah abdulrahman Albabtain, Andrea Piccioni Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/77954/towards-precision-medicine-in-sepsis-from-diagnosis-to-targeted-therapies
