Training Load in Sport: Current Challenges and Future Perspectives, volume III

Training load is a pivotal element in sports training, encompassing the adjustment of variables such as intensity, volume, frequency, and density to foster improvements in athletic performance. While beneficial, the manipulation of training load can also result in detrimental outcomes like excessive fatigue, injuries, and overtraining, which can ultimately hinder an athlete's performance and health. Thus, understanding how to optimize training load is essential to both enhance performance and reduce associated risks. This Research Topic aims to offer contemporary insights into the complexities and challenges associated with managing training load to maximize athletic performance and maintain the health of athletes across various sports and levels of competition. It seeks to uncover novel findings that could inform improved load prescription practices across different sports while also emphasizing preventive strategies and interventions for training-related injuries. Additionally, the aim is to explore the physiological mechanisms that underpin the relationship between training load and athletic performance, which could lead to the development of innovative, effective, and safer training methodologies.Given the complexities of training load management, this Research Topic covers a broad range of issues in its scope. We are looking to delve into:• The connection between training load and physiological responses to training.• Tailored strategies for performance optimization across different sports.• Training load's impact on fatigue, recovery, and long-term athlete health.• Methods and real-world applications for monitoring training load.• Injury prevention tactics for elite athletes.• Training prescriptions for young athletes aimed at sustained athletic development.• Overtraining syndrome: its diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.• Sports nutrition considerations in the context of training load.• Utilization of technology in training load monitoring and prescription.• Specific challenges and strategies associated with training athletes who have physical disabilities.Furthermore, we encourage submissions of various article types, including original research, clinical trials, and systematic reviews, to deepen our understanding and expand the scope of research within this field.
