Transformative Approaches in Asphalt Pavement Materials, Design, and Monitoring
This Research Topic is dedicated to recent innovations in asphalt pavement materials and technologies. Topics of interest include advances in asphalt materials, such as modifiers, additives, and bio-binders, as well as novel approaches for producing or preparing mineral aggregates. Studies on sustainable and innovative methods for asphalt pavement maintenance and repair, including techniques, such as induced heating–healing, are particularly welcome. Contributions on advanced analysis and design methods, such as nonlinear, viscoelastic, and viscoplastic modeling, are encouraged, along with research on smart and intelligent construction technologies, including intelligent compaction. Innovative approaches for energy harvesting from asphalt pavement structures are also of interest. Furthermore, this issue will cover the latest developments in asphalt pavement monitoring, including methods for measuring pavement responses and surveying surface conditions and deterioration. Studies on weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems, conducted at both laboratory and field scales, are likewise encouraged. In recent years, the increasing prevalence of heavy truck loads, new gear configurations, and advances in chemical and polymer components have highlighted the importance of modifiers and additives in asphalt pavement technology. This Research Topic will focus on recent developments in the application of innovative modifiers and additives, as well as novel approaches for the production and preparation of mineral aggregates. Moreover, numerous studies worldwide have explored the use of electrical and electromagnetic energies in asphalt pavement maintenance and repair, including techniques such as induced heating–healing. This collection aims at collecting contributions on innovative methods for maintaining and repairing asphalt pavements. Advanced analysis and design approaches, which are essential for accurately assessing the effects of heavy truck loads and unusual loading conditions, will also be featured. Smart and intelligent construction technologies, such as intelligent compaction, have gained significant attention for improving the quality and efficiency of pavement construction. This collection will include recent research and case studies on these smart-intelligent construction methods. Finally, advances in sensor technology for local measurement of pavement responses, as well as advanced monitoring systems for surveying surface conditions and deterioration, have opened new opportunities for data-driven pavement management. This Research Topic will cover the latest developments in pavement monitoring, response measurement, surface condition assessment, and weigh in motion (WIM) systems. It aims at gathering contributions devoted to, but not limited to, the following:• Recent developments in asphalt pavement materials, including asphalt binders and mineral aggregates.• Innovative approaches for the maintenance and repair of asphalt pavements, including induction heating–healing, de-icing techniques, cold mix applications, and recycling methods.• Advanced methods for the analysis and design of asphalt pavements, accounting for the time-dependent deformation of asphalt concrete (e.g., viscoelastic–viscoplastic behavior) and the nonlinear response of sublayers under static and dynamic loads.• Smart and intelligent construction of asphalt pavements, focusing on improving both construction speed and quality.• Energy harvesting from asphalt pavements and self-charging systems, with a focus on electrified road applications.• Innovative methods for monitoring asphalt pavement responses using advanced instrumentation and embedded sensors.• Advanced methods for surveying asphalt pavement surfaces and deterioration using image processing combined with artificial intelligence (AI).• Recent studies on weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems for asphalt pavements at both laboratory and field scales.
