Transforming Geriatric Pain Care With Technology
Pain in older adults remains a major clinical and public health challenge, affecting physical function, independence, emotional well-being, and quality of life. Yet conventional treatment pathways often fall short, especially in the context of multimorbidity, polypharmacy, cognitive impairment, and unequal access to specialist care. At the same time, rapid progress in digital health, assistive tools, remote care, and non-invasive technologies is opening new opportunities to improve how pain is assessed, monitored, and managed in later life. This Research Topic highlights the growing role of technology in shaping more responsive, personalized, and accessible pain care for older adults across clinical, community, and home settings. This Research Topic aims to showcase innovative and impactful research at the intersection of aging, pain, and technology. We invite contributions that examine how technological approaches can improve pain outcomes, support function, strengthen self-management, enhance care delivery, and reduce barriers to treatment for older adults. We are particularly interested in work that addresses real-world challenges such as usability, accessibility, adherence, equity, caregiver involvement, and implementation in routine practice. We welcome studies spanning early-stage innovation through clinical evaluation and service delivery. Relevant topics include digital therapeutics, mobile health, wearable devices, virtual reality, telehealth, remote monitoring, assistive technologies, smart home tools, robotics, and non-invasive neuromodulation. We also encourage submissions on technology-supported pain assessment, phenotyping, and personalized care, including work involving older adults with frailty, sensory impairment, cognitive impairment, or complex health needs. By bringing together multidisciplinary perspectives, this collection aims to define the future of technology-enabled geriatric pain care.Scope and Information for AuthorsWe welcome Original Research, Review articles, Mini-Reviews, Perspectives, Opinions, Systematic Reviews, Meta-analyses, and selected Case Reports relevant to the topic.Topics of interest include:- digital therapeutics and app-based pain interventions-telehealth and remote care models for older adults-wearable and sensor-based pain assessment or monitoring-virtual reality and technology-supported behavioral pain management- assistive devices, mobility technologies, and robotics- non-invasive neuromodulation and device-based therapies- usability, accessibility, and co-design for aging populations- caregiver-supported and home-based pain management- technology for pain care in cognitively impaired or frail older adults- implementation, adoption, disparities, and equity in technology-enabled pain careWe encourage submissions that align with the Geriatric Pain section of Frontiers in Pain Research while placing the main emphasis on how technology can advance pain care for older adults.
