Transforming Thoracic Surgical Training: Innovation, Recruitment, and Adaptation amid New Challenges
Thoracic surgical education is entering a pivotal period, influenced by the rapid integration of innovative technologies and the realities of limited resources. The demands of contemporary thoracic surgery require that training and recruitment practices evolve to maintain excellence in patient care. Questions have emerged regarding how best to prepare the next generation of thoracic surgeons, with challenges stemming from shifting generational attitudes, the adoption of robotic and minimally invasive techniques, and economic pressures that limit program resources. Recent research highlights that both structural redesigns and adaptive teaching approaches are needed to motivate trainees and address the unique requirements of modern thoracic surgery. Furthermore, there is growing acknowledgment of the need to address diversity, ergonomic considerations, and intergenerational learning styles within thoracic surgical education. This Research Topic aims to explore critical challenges and forward-thinking solutions in thoracic surgical training and recruitment. The main objective is to identify effective models for educating future thoracic surgeons, evaluate the impact of new technologies on training, and develop strategies that ensure resilience and sustainability in thoracic surgical workforce development. Specific focal points include optimizing recruitment and retention, adapting teaching methods to match today’s expectations, and maximizing the educational potential of emerging surgical innovations within constrained financial environments. The scope of this Research Topic is centered on educational practices, recruitment strategies, and adaptation in thoracic surgical training in light of technological and economic change. Studies outside of thoracic surgery or those with a purely technical focus will not be prioritized. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Robotic and virtual reality-based thoracic surgical training- Assessment and progression along the thoracic surgery learning curve- Strategies for recruiting and retaining future thoracic surgeons- Financial challenges and resource optimization in thoracic surgical training- Intergenerational dynamics in thoracic surgery education- Gender-related and ergonomic considerations in thoracic surgical trainingTopic Editor Julia Strauchmann receives educational sponsorship from Intuitive Surgical for clinical training and certification on the DaVinci Xi robotic surgery system, which covers training courses and fees, with no personal honoraria or research funding provided.
