Translating Exercise Physiology into Personalized Health and Performance

Exercise physiology has entered a new era of precision. Historically anchored in standardized protocols and general population data, the field is now evolving toward individualized approaches guided by detailed physiological, metabolic, and molecular markers. Advances in cardiopulmonary testing, wearable monitoring, biomarker analysis, and computational modeling have deepened our understanding of variability in exercise responses. Yet, despite these technological breakthroughs, the translation of complex physiological data into meaningful and actionable exercise prescriptions remains inconsistent. Misconceptions and oversimplified paradigms, such as fixed training zones or unvalidated recovery strategies, continue to blur the boundary between evidence-based science and everyday practice, limiting the impact of exercise physiology on real-world health and performance outcomes. This Research Topic aims to accelerate the integration of translational physiology and precision exercise medicine into personalized health strategies. The goal is to identify how biomarkers, diagnostics, and performance assessment tools can be interpreted and applied to design tailored interventions for disease prevention, rehabilitation, and athletic optimization. Core questions include how individual variability shapes training adaptation, how metabolic and neuromuscular thresholds can guide personalization, and how misinterpretations of data can be corrected through evidence-based methodologies. We particularly encourage research that validates translational frameworks, tests individualized exercise models, and critically evaluates widespread misconceptions in sport and fitness science. To gather further insights into the translation of physiological research into personalized exercise practice, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes: • Biomarker and metabolic interpretation for personalized exercise prescription • Advances and limitations in cardiopulmonary and neuromuscular diagnostics • Mechanistic understanding of inter-individual variability in exercise adaptation • Integration of precision tools and wearable technologies in real-world training • Critical reassessment of popular but misunderstood exercise concepts • Translational approaches bridging laboratory findings to practical applications in health, rehabilitation, and elite performance • Methodological frameworks for evidence-based, individualized exercise prescription We welcome original research, systematic reviews, methodological papers, and perspective articles that critically advance the translation of exercise physiology into actionable, highprecision health and performance solutions.
