Translational Aspects of Neurodegeneration: From Mechanisms and Biomarkers to Innovative Therapies
Neurodegenerative diseases represent a major and growing global health challenge. They are characterized by complex and interconnected molecular mechanisms that ultimately lead to progressive neuronal dysfunction and loss, placing an increasing burden on patients, caregivers, and health systems worldwide. Despite substantial advances in understanding disease mechanisms, translating these discoveries into reliable biomarkers and effective therapies remains difficult, and the gap between mechanistic insight and clinical benefit continues to slow progress. This Research Topic brings together recent advances in the study of neurodegeneration from a translational perspective, with particular emphasis on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying disease initiation and progression, the identification and validation of biomarkers, and the development of innovative therapeutic strategies. Contributions addressing protein misfolding and aggregation, oxidative and metabolic stress, neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and mechanisms of neuronal vulnerability are particularly encouraged. Studies exploring novel biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis, disease monitoring, and therapeutic response, as well as emerging pharmacological, biological, and molecular interventions, are also welcome. We encourage work that connects experimental findings to clinically meaningful endpoints. The Research Topic aims to foster interactions between basic, translational, and clinical research and to highlight emerging concepts with the potential to accelerate the development of precision approaches for neurodegenerative diseases. We particularly welcome contributions addressing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and related proteinopathies, while also encouraging studies across neurodegenerative disorders to identify shared mechanisms and therapeutic opportunities. By drawing connections across conditions, the collection seeks to surface common pathways and translational strategies that may generalize beyond a single disease.Submissions should retain a clear translational dimension. We welcome Original Research, Reviews, Mini-Reviews, Perspectives, and Methods articles.
