Translational Research on Cancer Immunity and Immunotherapy: Preclinical and Clinical Investigations from Latin America

Cancer immunotherapy has successfully joined the arsenal to treat tumours, along with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The broad use of monoclonal antibodies to inhibit immune checkpoints and the more reinvigorated focus on cancer vaccines warrant a fertile soil for the development of more efficacious anti-tumour agents. In the last decades, intense translational research has contributed to cancer immunotherapy establishment and expansion to multiple tumour types. Current clinical trials are clearly enriched in immunotherapeutic strategies that are being tested in almost every tumour histology. However, since only a fraction of the patients achieve significant and prolonged benefit of cancer immunotherapy, still there is a need to improve such treatments, test new combinations and find biomarkers associated to the clinical response. This Research Topic aims to provide an overview of current research on the field of cancer immunotherapy, with particular focus on their translation into the development of new cancer immunotherapeutic agents and combinations. We invite specially researchers from Latin American countries to contribute with their studies in order to give more visibility to their work. This Research Topic accepts Original Research, Systematic Review, Methods, Review and Mini-Review, Clinical Trial, Perspective, Case Report, Brief Research Report. We will include translational studies about the interaction of the immune system and the tumours as well as the latest advances in the field of immune checkpoint blockade, therapeutic cancer vaccines and new combinations, including preclinical studies and clinical trials. We welcome manuscripts focusing on, but not limited to, the following sub-topics:- Cancer immunotherapy with monoclonal antibodies, new combinations with drugs, preclinical and clinical studies - Therapeutic Cancer Vaccines mechanisms and efficacy in preclinical and clinical studies - Development of new agents for cancer immunotherapy, including cellular therapies - Real-world clinical results of cancer immunotherapy in Latin America, experience and challenges in the region- Development or optimization of new tools for neoepitope prediction to improve cancer vaccine design - Biomarkers of response to cancer immunotherapyManuscripts consisting solely of bioinformatics or computational analysis of public genomic or transcriptomic databases which are not accompanied by robust and relevant validation (clinical cohort or biological validation in vitro or in vivo) are out of scope for this topic.
