Trauma-Induced ARDS: Pathophysiological Insights and Clinical Outcomes

Trauma remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, often leading to severe complications like acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Despite advances in trauma care and intensive care systems, trauma-related ARDS presents persistent clinical and scientific challenges. Unlike other forms of ARDS, trauma-induced ARDS has its unique pathophysiological mechanisms, such as direct pulmonary contusion, fat embolism, transfusion-related injuries, and complex inflammatory responses. It necessitates tailored clinical approaches, especially for populations affected by blunt or penetrating injuries, traumatic brain injuries, burns, and incidents in military or mass-casualty settings. Recent global health crises and mass casualty incidents have emphasized the unpredictable burden of trauma and ARDS, particularly in resource-limited environments. Current studies are focusing on better understanding the early identification, molecular pathways, prevention, and management strategies for trauma-induced ARDS, as well as exploring new biomarkers, ventilatory techniques, and therapeutic interventions. This Research Topic aims to advance the understanding of the interplay between trauma and ARDS by promoting comprehensive investigation and discussion. We aim to showcase the latest translational and clinical research, discover emerging diagnostic and prognostic tools, and identify novel therapeutic avenues and multidisciplinary management strategies specific to trauma-induced ARDS. By incorporating global perspectives from critical care, pulmonology, trauma surgery, emergency medicine, and related fields, we hope to facilitate improved recognition, prevention, and patient outcomes while encouraging further research collaborations in this high-impact domain. To gather further insights into trauma and ARDS across diverse disciplines, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Epidemiology and global/regional trends of trauma-associated ARDSo Pathophysiological mechanisms unique to trauma-induced ARDS, including specific injuries (e.g., pulmonary contusion, burns)o Early identification, diagnostic criteria, and prognostic indicators in trauma ARDSo Translational or bench-to-bedside studies of novel biomarkers or therapeutic targetso Updates on ventilatory management, rescue therapies (ECMO, prone positioning), and fluid/blood product strategieso Insights from military, mass-casualty, and resource-limited settingso Pediatric and special populations Topic editors: Shou-Yin Jiang, Bao-ping Tian, Debabrata Bandyopadhyay Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/83800/trauma-induced-ards-pathophysiological-insights-and-clinical-outcomes
