Tropical Soils: Potential for Agroecological Systems and Food Security

Agroecology is increasingly recognized as the way forward for sustainable agriculture, capable of delivering productivity goals while conserving the environment and empowering communities. Agroecology, which uses ecological concepts and principles for the design and management of sustainable agricultural systems, has consistently proven capable of sustainably increasing the total output of diversified farms and has far greater potential for fighting hunger, particularly during economically and climatically uncertain times. However, tropical environments of the Global South still struggle with the challenges of low agricultural yields and growing hunger. Understanding the vast potential and role of tropical soils in sustainable agroecology-based farming systems is crucial to sustain food production while enhancing ecosystem services. The development and application of novel and improved practices that enhance soil organic matter, nutrient cycling, soil water, and soil physical conditions offer significant potential for creating resilient agricultural systems. This Research Topic provides a platform for the publication of high-quality original research articles, critical review articles, and short communications that investigate the potential of agroecology-based practices in improving the productivity and resilience of inherently low-fertility or degraded tropical soils. The issue aims to highlight innovative scientific approaches, ecological management strategies, and context-specific technologies that can restore soil health by enhancing soil organic matter, nutrient cycling, soil water, soil physical conditions and support sustainable agricultural intensification in tropical environments. Particular emphasis will be placed on contributions that demonstrate practical and scalable solutions for developing environmentally sustainable, economically viable, and socially inclusive agricultural production systems capable of addressing current and future challenges related to food security, land degradation, and climate change. We welcome submissions in, but not limited to, the following areas: - Innovative technologies for the restoration of degraded tropical soils - Integrated soil fertility management for sustainable food security- Design and development of cost-effective technologies for improving soil health and crop production- Restoration of salt-affected soils for sustainable crop production- Regenerative agriculture and soil health- Sustainable soil management for climate change mitigation- Technologies for limiting soil pollution by chemical fertilizers and pesticides- Organic agriculture Topic editors: KOME GEORGES KOGGE Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/81640/tropical-soils-potential-for-agroecological-systems-and-food-security
