Tuberculosis in Focus: Antibiotic Resistance and New Antimicrobial Drugs
Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology is launching a special Research Topic series dedicated to advancing the understanding, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of tuberculosis (TB). As TB remains one of the deadliest infectious diseases globally, this series aims to foster interdisciplinary research, highlight cutting-edge findings, and stimulate collaborations to support global efforts to end this epidemic. In the "Antibiotic Resistance and New Antimicrobial Drugs" section, we seek contributions addressing critical issues surrounding drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB), including multidrug-resistant (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR-TB) strains. Topics span from novel antimicrobial compounds and repurposed drugs to innovative approaches mitigating resistance mechanisms. Research on molecular epidemiology of resistance, drug discovery pipelines, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, combination therapies, and implementation strategies to reduce resistance emergence are highly encouraged. This collection aims to highlight innovative advances that can shape global strategies for effective drug-resistant tuberculosis management.
