Tuberculosis: Recent Updates in Basic Research, Drug Discovery and Treatment - Volume IV

Building on the success of "Tuberculosis: Recent Updates in Basic Research, Drug Discovery and Treatment - Volume III", we are pleased to announce the launch of Volume IV.Tuberculosis (TB) research addresses a persistent global health challenge, as TB remains a major cause of illness and death worldwide. Despite progress in treatment, diagnosis, and prevention, lengthy and complex regimens, adverse effects, and drug resistance continue to complicate disease management. The disruption of health services during the COVID-19 pandemic also set back TB prevention, diagnosis, and treatment efforts, underscoring the need to strengthen progress toward global control goals. Research has advanced understanding of Mycobacterium tuberculosis biology and informed the development of new drugs, combination regimens, diagnostics, and vaccine candidates. However, important questions remain about how the pathogen adapts to drug exposure, how its metabolic remodelling affects treatment response, and how emerging findings can be translated into safer and more effective care. Further basic and clinical investigation is needed to address these gaps and improve TB control. This Research Topic aims to advance basic and clinical research on TB pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, disease management, and drug discovery. It will explore how M. tuberculosis responds to drugs, including through metabolic remodelling, and seek insights that can support the development of more effective therapeutic strategies and improved patient outcomes. To gather further insights into TB biology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment, we welcome contributions across pulmonary and other forms of TB, while emphasizing pathogen responses to drugs and therapeutic development. Themes include, but are not limited to:- TB pathogenesis and determinants of disease- Drug discovery and development for TB, including pulmonary TB- Metabolic responses of M. tuberculosis to drugs and lead compounds- Molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying mycobacterial drug responses- Advances in TB vaccines and diagnostic methods- Treatment strategies and disease management for multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant TB- Approaches to improving the safety and effectiveness of TB therapiesPlease note that Case Reports are not within the scope of this Research Topic and will not be considered for publication.
