Uncharted Depths: Microbial Diversity, Adaptation, and Bioprospecting in the Deep Ocean
The deep ocean, encompassing depths greater than 200 meters, represents Earth’s largest and least explored biome. It sustains immense microbial diversity shaped by high hydrostatic pressure, low temperatures, complete darkness, and unique geochemical conditions. These microorganisms play pivotal roles in global biogeochemical cycles, contributing to carbon sequestration, nutrient regeneration, and energy transformation. Despite advances in deep-sea exploration, the majority of these microbes remain uncultured, and their metabolic functions are largely unknown. Recent developments in metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and single-cell genomics have shed light on community structure and functional potential in deep-sea ecosystems such as hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, and abyssal plains. However, our understanding of their adaptation mechanisms and their potential contributions to biotechnology continues to lag behind, underscoring the need for integrative research bridging microbial ecology, physiology, and application. This Research Topic aims to investigate the diversity, adaptation strategies, and practical potential of deep-ocean microbes to expand our understanding of life under extreme conditions and its implications for biotechnology. It seeks to address key questions related to how microorganisms persist and function in deep-sea environments, how genomic and metabolic traits underpin these adaptations, and how these biological capabilities can be exploited for the development of novel extremozymes, biomolecules, and sustainable technologies. To gather further insights into marine microbiology and deep-sea biotechnology, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:Microbial community diversity and ecological roles across deep-sea habitats.Molecular and physiological mechanisms of adaptation to high pressure, low temperature, and oligotrophy.Discovery and characterization of deep-sea-derived enzymes and biomaterials for industrial use.Screening and functional analysis of bioactive compounds with pharmaceutical potential.Innovative cultivation and omics-based methods linking uncultured microbes to their ecological functions.Integration of genomic, biochemical, and biotechnological approaches for applied marine microbiology.
