Understanding and Addressing Ecological Implications of Hydrologic Stress in Aquatic Ecosystems

Hydrologic modification is a pervasive issue across the globe. Lotic, lentic, and tidal aquatic resources are all affected by combinations of hydrologic alteration associated with climate change and changes in human water demands. Methods are necessary to evaluate potential effects and inform management actions. Approaches are particularly needed in data poor areas and areas without the resources to conduct extensive modeling – where aquatic resources are potentially most at risk. This Research Topic will present case studies of innovative approaches for evaluating hydrologic stress on aquatic resources that demonstrate tools applicable in data poor or under-resourced areas. It will highlight trade-offs between aquatic and human uses of water and the potential for win-win outcomes from water management. This Research Topic welcomes submissions which focus on, but are not limited to:• Using remote sensing to assess hydrologic alteration;• Statistical extrapolations across broad geographies;• Relating hydrologic change to ecological consequences, focusing on biological communities;• Assessing the effect of climate change on hydrologic alteration; • Interactions of hydrologic change and associated chemical changes (e.g., temperature, salinity);• Effects on estuaries and wetlands (lentic waterbodies);• Effects on streams and rivers;• Management responses to reduce the biological effects of hydrologic change;• Adaptative management actions associated with managing hydrologic effects;• Evaluating the efficacy of management actions;• Methods to improve communication about effects of hydrologic alteration to managers, policy makers, and other affected stakeholders; and• Trade-off analysis to balance needs of the environment and needs of people.
