Understanding Concurrent Disorders in Addiction - Treatment Challenges and Opportunities
The co-occurrence of addition and co-occurring mental health disorders – referred to as concurrent disorders – represents a significant area of concern for clinicians and researchers. This refers to the presence a psychiatric condition and an addictive disorder. Both conditions often develop together and can significantly impact one another, intensifying symptoms and complicating treatment. Common risk factors to comorbidity can include genetics, individual characteristics, social environment and life circumstances.Comorbidity poses unique challenges in the treatment and management, necessitating a nuanced understanding of their dynamics and impacts. Current evidence shows that individuals with dual diagnosis often have more complex clinical needs and poorer outcomes compared to those with a single diagnosis. Understanding the interplay between addictive disorders and psychiatric conditions is essential for developing effective treatment protocols that address both conditions. This Research Topic aims to advance the understanding of co-occurring substance use and mental health problems by highlighting diagnostic difficulties, assessing integrated treatment models, and exploring the roles of neurobiological and psychosocial factors. We aim to uncover effective strategies for diagnosis and care, improve patient outcomes, and inform best practices for service delivery. We invite contributions that address (but are not limited to) the following topics:- Prevalence and co-occurrence patterns of addiction and psychiatric disorders (including mood and anxiety disorders, severe and persistent mental health disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders and other addictions such as gambling and sexual disorders).- Diagnostic challenges and the effectiveness of current diagnostic criteria.- Psychopharmacological treatments for dual diagnosis.- Integrated treatment strategies for managing dual diagnosis.- Self-medication model and dual disorders.
