Understanding Interfacial Synergy in Nanocomposites for Advanced Energy and Sensing Applications
The field of nanocomposites, particularly those involving two-dimensional (2D) materials integrated with other 2D or zero-dimensional (0D) nanostructures, is experiencing a transformative era. Recent advancements have highlighted how these hybrid systems exhibit unique properties that extend beyond the simple sum of their parts, suggesting a paradigm shift in material design for energy storage, conversion, and sensing technologies. Current research focuses on understanding the synergistic interactions at the interfaces that drive these remarkable properties. However, gaps remain in fully elucidating the mechanisms governing these interactions, especially concerning electronic and interfacial charge dynamics and their impact on the functionality of energy and sensing applications. This Research Topic aims to explore the fundamental driving forces behind these synergistic interfaces, focusing on uncovering the principles that facilitate enhanced energy and sensing functionalities. Particular attention will be given to the roles of electronic structure modulations, interfacial charge dynamics, structural and morphological control, chemical and catalytic enhancements, and stability improvements in shaping the performance of 2D-2D and 2D-0D nanocomposites. By answering key questions related to these themes, this initiative seeks to advance knowledge on hybrid nanocomposite interactions and to establish design principles for next-generation functional materials. To gather further insights, this Research Topic is confined to investigations into the synergistic interactions within nanocomposite interfaces. We welcome Original Research, Review, Mini Review and Perspective articles on themes including, but not limited to:-Electronic structure modulations and band engineering.-Interfacial charge dynamics and enhanced transport.-Structural and morphological control strategies.-Chemical and catalytic enhancement mechanisms.-Stability improvements and stress management.-Applications of interest include energy storage (e.g., supercapacitors, Li/Na-ion batteries), energy conversion (e.g., photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical processes), and sensing platforms (e.g., electrochemical sensors, gas sensors).
