Understanding Language Abilities and Variability in Autism Spectrum Disorders
Language development in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) represents a dynamic and multifaceted area within neurodevelopmental research. While language delay and difficulties are often among the first concerns noted by caregivers, individuals with autism demonstrate a striking variability in linguistic abilities, ranging from unimpaired and fluent language use to severe impairment or minimal verbal communication. This heterogeneity has become a central focus of contemporary inquiry, with ongoing debates surrounding its underlying causes and developmental trajectories. Recent studies have identified diverse cognitive, neural, and environmental factors that may influence language skills in ASD, yet the precise mechanisms remain elusive. Cutting-edge technologies such as EEG, eye-tracking, and computational language analysis now offer new windows into the behavioral and neural signatures of language processing in this population, but a comprehensive and integrative understanding of language heterogeneity is still lacking. This Research Topic aims to advance the field by clarifying the multifactorial contributors to language variability in ASD and identifying mechanisms that shape developmental pathways. The key objective is to move beyond descriptive approaches by encouraging multidisciplinary research that incorporates behavioral, neurocognitive, computational, and translational perspectives. By fostering work that explains sources of heterogeneity across different language profiles, this topic seeks to generate actionable insights for clinicians, educators, and researchers. Specific questions to be addressed include: What cognitive or environmental factors most strongly predict language trajectories in ASD? How do new computational methods enhance the assessment or classification of language difficulties? And how can this knowledge be mobilized to improve intervention and support across the autism spectrum? This Research Topic seeks contributions addressing the broad landscape of language abilities in ASD while explicitly focusing on sources of variability, developmental change, and practical assessment or intervention. Submissions may address any stage of the lifespan, all language profiles, and a variety of methodological approaches, but should avoid studies focused solely on describing prevalence without addressing underlying factors. To gather further insights in language variability and development in ASD, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes: • Innovative behavioral and neurophysiological methods for language assessment in ASD, such as EEG or eye-tracking • Longitudinal and developmental studies of language trajectories in autistic populations • Application of AI, machine learning, and natural language processing for language analysis and classification • Explainable AI approaches to identifying linguistic and communicative markers of ASD • Cognitive, social, neural, developmental, and environmental factors influencing language outcomes • Cross-linguistic and cross-cultural research, especially in understudied or low-resource languages • Translational work linking research outcomes to clinical, educational, or intervention practiceThis Research Topic welcomes Original Research, Reviews, and Mini Reviews.
